Why your X should be set to USA + English (even if it's not your language)
X's algorithm classifies every post by language and shows it mostly to people who speak it. Post in French, reach francophones; post in English, reach the whole indie scene. Country (USA) drives trends and recommendations; display language drives what X translates INTO. Set both to the US/English channel — and use Yaply to keep reading and replying in your own language.
Country vs display language: two different levers
Country (Settings → Your account) shapes trends, recommendations and ads. Display language (Settings → Accessibility, display and languages) sets the interface AND the target of X's built-in translation. 'Languages you speak' tells the algorithm what content to recommend you. USA + English + English-only spoken = the full US firehose.
"Grok will translate my posts anyway" is a trap
Auto-translation changes what readers SEE, not who the algorithm SHOWS it to. Distribution happens first, by post language and early engagement. A French post starts in the French pool — a fraction of the reach. If you want the US indie audience, you post in English. No translation setting fixes distribution after the fact.
The catch: your whole X becomes English
Once your account targets English, X translates everything INTO English — never into your native language. Reading dense English all day is friction, and writing native-sounding replies is worse.
