Twitter Translate Not Working? Here's How to Fix It

The translate button usually disappears because of your language settings: if X thinks you already speak the post's language, it hides the button. Remove that language from your settings, update the app, or open the post on x.com in a browser. And know this: even when it works, X only translates posts you read — never your DMs, never your replies.

Fix the missing translate button

Fix 1 — language settings. X hides the translate button when it thinks you already speak the post's language. Go to Settings → Accessibility, display and languages → Languages, and remove any language you don't actually read. Fix 2 — update the app. Old versions of the X app lose the button entirely. Update from your app store, then force-close and reopen. Fix 3 — check your display language. If your display language matches the post's language, no button appears. Set it to the one language you actually read in, save, and reload your timeline.

Still broken? Two more fixes

Fix 4 — switch between app and web. The button often shows on x.com in a browser when the app hides it, and the other way around. Open the same post on the other one. Fix 5 — log out and log back in. A stale session can silently break translation. Log out, clear the app cache (or your browser cache), then sign back in. If all five fail, translation is down on X's side. It happens more often than you'd think — nothing to do but wait.

X translate stops at reading posts

Even when the button works, X only translates posts you read — and the output is robotic. Tone, slang and irony get flattened. It never translates your DMs. It never writes your replies.
